Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!
UPDATES - 3/19/18 Thank you thank you to everyone who took the time to audition for RiverClan deputy. After much deliberation we congratulate Mountainfang (Mink) on getting the position! Remember ThunderClan deputy is still open for auditions, and WindClan deputy will be again in the near future! We still have some medicine cats looking for apprentices, too (if interested PM the medicine cats!).
UPDATES - 3/17/18 A big thank you to everyone who applied to and showed interest in the WindClan deputy position. After discussing the characters and proposed plots we congratulate Jackdawclaw (Yazsh) on getting the position. If you have any questions or would like help with your next audition you can send staff a PM or DM. If you missed out we encourage you to apply for RiverClan deputy before the deadline on March 19th and for ThunderClan deputy. WindClan deputy auditions will open up again in the near future, so keep an eye out!
UPDATES - 03/16/18 RiverClan deputy audition deadline is Monday March 19th! Please get auditions in before then if you're interested in trying out for the position. If you think you may need more time speak to staff asap and the deadline may be extended. Also, we have an activity check running until March 31st, so make sure and post in that ASAP!
UPDATES - 03/14/18 WindClan deputy audition deadline is Saturday March 17th! Please get auditions in before then if you're interested in trying out for the position. If you think you may need more time speak to staff asap and the deadline may be extended.
UPDATES - 03/12/18 Okay hold on to your hats my friends! We now have RiverClan and WindClan deputy open for auditions as well. Link to the high rank board to the left as well as in the news blurb below this one. Same rules apply as with TC deputy -- fill out the audition form and send it to all staff members.
UPDATES - 03/11/18 ThunderClan deputy is now open for auditions. Please be sure to read over the high rank info here. If interested in the position please fill out the audition form and send it to staff as well as Madelin. MCA positions are still open (info below). Keep your eyes open for an activity check in the near future too (and hopefully a new skin if Mink can find time to do a banner!). I should add, while not necessary, including plot ideas (even if they are far out) is very much helpful!
UPDATES - 02/28/18 Rainbow has opened a temporary WindClan MCA position and is asking that interested parties be open to them losing the position within a few months so be sure to have plot ideas as to how they lose the position (death, failing to save a patient, etc) and DM (discord) or PM them your ideas and a bit about the character if they don't already exist on the site. Both RiverClan and SkyClan MCA are now open as well, and those interested should PM/DM Madelin and Trick respectively with your ideas, bio links, or a little about the character's personality/history if they don't they don't yet exist on site.
UPDATES - 02/26/18 A nasty case of greencough has taken SkyClan's deputy, Orcasong. Thankfully, it hasn't shown signs of spreading to the rest of the clan yet. Sequoiastar has chosen Weaselwhisker as her new deputy (which will be officially announced during an upcoming meeting along with a few other exciting things for the clan). Also be on the lookout for more news about the war between ThunderClan and WindClan. Staff will likely start a sign up sheet in the next couple of days to assemble patrols once the ThunderClan meeting has progressed a bit further, so please get your cats' responses into that as well as finishing up your Gathering posts. Because of plot progression and the nature of our sandbox roleplay style, both WC and TC deputy positions may be opening up in the near future. We will open auditions and make additional announcements when that times comes, but go ahead and start thinking about exciting plots for your potential deputies and brush up on the requirements of the position, which are located here!
UPDATES - 01/30/18 A very special announcement! Please join us in congratulating Monument on her engagement!
UPDATES - 01/30/18 The activity check is over and those who did not post or speak to staff have been deleted or moved into our inactive group where they will remain for two weeks before being deleted themselves; bios are never deleted, but are instead moved into our archives. If you have been deleted and wish to rejoin please feel free, and if you find yourself in the inactive group you'll have to PM a staff member with links to your bios and threads to have those moved back. All cats have been aged so please check to see if your characters have moved into a new age bracket, or if they are old enough for a rank change (speak to your leader or update directories/names if that's the case). Be sure to check mentors & apprentices to see if anything has changed, and keep in mind staff is turning those who are not reliable with training threads away from both mentoring and receiving a mentor themselves until consistency can be shown. Our site gathering is still going on (it's just gotten started!) so be sure to check that out.
UPDATES - 01/23/18 Site gathering is up here. Please do not post until the leader of your cats clan has. Leaders have the right to deny a cat access to the gathering and will let those who cannot attend know. The gathering can count as one of your active threads for the activity check.
UPDATES - 01/19/18 An activity check is up here. It will run until Tuesday the 30th of January.
UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.
In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.
UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.
UPDATES - 01/10/18Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.
UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D
UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.
UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!
UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.
UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!
UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).
UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.
UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.
UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.
UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.
UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.
She's like a cat in the dark &then she is the darkness. she rules her life like a bird in flight
The loss of Orcasong struck a cord within Sequoiastar. The two she-cats may not have been exceptionally close but losing her was a hard morsel to swallow. She had been her responsibility and while she couldn't fight illness it somehow felt like it was her fault. Brightowl had long since prepared her body for burial and she had until moon-high to name another deputy. It felt far too soon. The clan may have grieved but was that enough time to think of her replacement? It was almost cruel. However, there were a few apprentices that she felt were ready to become warriors and it came at the most opportune moment. Leaf-bare had been unkind to the clans and tensions have rose (that had been made clear at the gathering). Skyclan was still fighting for their leftover territories and having more available warriors would only strengthen them.
The calico rose to her paws and gracefully moved toward the High Wing. "Let all cats young and old gather for a clan meeting," she called. It may not have been the exact ceremonious words but she believed that all cats should bear witness to the ceremonies she would soon perform. Sequoiastar sat back on her haunches, her tail draped around her paws, as she waited for her clan mates to gather.
SkyClan was fortunate to have as much land as they currently did. It was difficult to keep it all properly patrolled with the amount of cats that they had, but the other clans seemed to have other issues to focus on at the moment. This was a very good thing because SkyClan was hurting. They had lost three prominent cats within a short span of time. Chicoryfrost knew that he wouldn't be around forever, but that didn't make his death any easier. Brinestorm had been a strong opponent at one time, but his disease made him weak, and he was picked off by a maniac from ShadowClan. Losing him was probably the most heart-wrenching because he was going to be a father, but never got the chance to meet his kits. The death of Orcasong was also quite sad because no one had expected it. She was fine one day, then experienced a very rapid decline in health. There wasn't much time for Brightowl to even treat her symptoms.
Despite all of the death and sadness, SkyClan still had plenty to celebrate. Sequoiastar's kits were growing and becoming more worrisome every day, and there were a couple of apprentices that were ready to receive their names. The rest of the clan was fairing okay, and they were thankful that the disease hadn't spread to the rest of their ranks.
Weaselwhisker had been expecting Sequoiastar to make an announcement of sorts at some point during the day, so he hadn't strayed far from camp. He had informed her a few days ago that he thought Sparrowpaw was ready for her name, and he didn't want to miss the ceremony if it was happening today. When he heard the she-cat's voice calling a meeting, Weasel's ears perked up. He dropped what he was doing, which was helping to clean out old nests, and trotted over to join the rest of his clanmates. There was a slightly depressing cloud hovering over the clan, but he hoped that they could overcome this hurdle just like they had with everything else that had been thrown their way.
Orcasong’s death had hit her heard. She and the deputy hadn’t been fast friends, but the black and white cat had been working hard towards it, maybe something more, while Webtail was enjoying the attention and rivalry she felt for the other cat; she had, before Orcasong had died, told her she was vying for her position, but it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Webtail struggled between feelings of anger and sadness, and didn’t even entertain the thought of the name Sequoiastar would call to be her next deputy would be her; she didn’t want it now, and besides, she didn’t yet qualify as she lacked having taught an apprentice under clan policy.
In stony silence the marbled cat moved from the belly of the monster that served as their camp to sit beneath the wing that their leader now perched upon. They had been fortunate in that the sickness that claimed Orcasong hadn’t claimed more of their precious few warriors, nor any of the clan’s first kittens, but the loss so soon after their medicine cat was a hard one. She could only imagine how Sequoiastar was feeling, and admired the outward strength she showed the clan.
Beetleclaw couldn’t claim to know the deputy very well; he had, in truth, resented her young age and inexperience, and hadn’t been blind to the way the other deputies (for the most part) heckled her for her age, too. He supposed he ought to have admired her for keeping her head high in the face of adversity. Still, the black warrior was saddened to see anyone, especially one so young, die; SkyClan was already few compared to the other clans, and any loss was a devastating one, and one SkyClan didn’t need so soon after Brinestorm’s and Chicoryfrost’s deaths.
His thick pelt bristled against the chill of the air—a chill he hoped soon would be gone with the arrival of new-leaf—and moved with his clan mates towards Sequoiastar. Some had already found their seats and settled, but Beetleclaw lingered a moment in the back to see if Anisefur had beat him—she hadn’t. Anisefur was very much still private to him, but he still considered her his best friend in the clan, and in time hoped to get her to trust him.
Hoping the calico would join him Beetleclaw picked a spot midway up the gathering clump of cats and seated himself.
We're not stories, we're not actors
We're awake and in control
A thick haze clouded Coyotepaw’s head as he listlessly milled around camp. Her body was there, ready to be mourned and buried, but he couldn’t bring himself to look. Instead, he’d attempted to stick to the routines, limply going through the motions of clan life. As long as he didn’t look it hadn’t really happened, not yet. As long as he didn’t look he didn’t have to face reality yet.
It would have been easier to mourn openly, but he was a proud cat and refused to show weakness –even with grief nipping impatiently on his heels. Coyotepaw couldn’t be anything but strong and unshakable. So when Sequoiastar called all cats to gather he resolutely heeded the summons without allowing a single thought to stray to the obvious reason why there was a meeting.
Sitting in the midst of the growing crowd, he kept his eyes trained on the long-haired calico atop the wing. A part of him yearned to look for Shoalclaw or Sparrowpaw, or even to start bickering with Mantispaw, but the thought of initiating any contact felt dangerous. He couldn’t trust his tongue to hold firm right now, not with his mentor lying dead only a few foxlengths away. Orcasong.
i want blood, guts, and chocolate cake. i wanna be a real fake
The intentional edit to the usual meeting call made Seakit’s fur prickle with pride. She lapped at her shoulder hastily, quickly slicking her beautiful blue points into place. The mood in camp had been dismal all day, but try as she might Seakit couldn’t miss the cat she’d barely known. Orcasong had been important, though, and that stuck with her. Someday she would be important too, and then everyone would definitely miss her when she died!
Looking up, Seakit tried to catch the gazes of her littermates. She was determined to join the meeting, but it’d feel much better if the others came too. “Do you think mommy’s going to make us apprentices?” Her mew was low, but her bright blue eyes gave away her eagerness. “That would cheer everyone up! Maybe even mommy would smile again.”
She lingered in the fallen bird a heartbeat longer, double-checking that she wouldn’t be the only kit. Then, head high and bushy tail held aloft, Seakit hopped down the entrance and onto solid ground. Once there excitement overran her desire to look like a grownup, and the kitten bolted into the growing crowd where she found a seat not too far from the front.
When Orcasong had first fallen ill, a new tension arose in the camp. There was the question of whether or not the sickness would spread, and given how badly it had affected Orcasong, that was a dangerous thing. Despite anything Brightowl tried to do, Orcasong was dead and gone before the clan could fully process it.
Dahliaheart didn't have any opinions on the matter, but she treated the situation as she had when Chicoryfrost's body had been brought back to camp. She spent some time sitting beside the body, head dipped down as though in prayer or mourning. In reality, she had been thinking about Orcasong and what her death would mean for the clan. Would the loss hurt the clan? Had Orcasong been a necessary asset? Orcasong had seemed a little unsure when Dahliaheart had talked to her one morning before her illness struck. If she hadn't been confident in her position, wasn't it better to replace her with a more suitable cat?
She roused from her thoughts when Sequoiastar called for the meeting. She stepped away from Orcasong and moved closer to the leader. She wondered who would have to step up as deputy and if they'd be as young and scattered as Orcasong.
As she observed the clan coming together, she noticed Slatefur coming her way. She smiled and brushed her tail across the ground beside her, indicating that she welcomed his company. The tom was quirky, but perhaps even he had a chance at deputy. Once Slatefur had had a seat, Dahliaheart looked back up at Sequoiastar. "Who do you think she will pick? I cannot imagine how it would feel to be given that responsibility. What an honor."
it just gives you the starting point of who you're going to be
Carolina had watched Sequoiastar as she made way to address the clan, a solemn look upon her face. The passing of Orcasong had came as a surprise too many, and she had been too young to have left life in such a manner... And yet it was what it was... She had not been particularly close to Orcasong, but the other had still been part of the family and her loss would be felt. Pressing herself up to her paws, she had started moving forward with a certain giddy feeling that fluttered in the pit of her stomach as she wound her way through her clan mates, given some respectful nods and others a light bump against the shoulder. Her eyes fell momentarily upon the kits that belonged to Sequoiastar ( her half siblings ) and a pang of love and pride swelled her heart... To make up for the painful pang when she realized that her brother ( Epsilon ) was not in sight... Not even close. Yet she never gave up hope that she'd one day meet him again. All in due time.
Placing herself down, she put her fluffy black tail across her paws and watched Sequoiastar with a smile upon her face. She wondered how the apprentices that would be getting their name would feel... She wondered if her name would match her. Oh she had given it thought indeed, but ended up deciding that a name was just a name... She had been Carolina for a long time, but she realized she did not mind being called another. It would make her blend in more with the life of a clan cat, too. Perhaps make her feel even more at home.
And it was with that thought she said patiently, biting down the light purr that threatened to break free.
The loss of Orcasong cut deep and was a painful reminder of how ruthless nature could be. Though the sickness had not spread to other cats, it still had came too fast... And though one fought bravely, sometimes the disease was stronger than the cure. It was a sad thing such a young cat as Orcasong had to feel that. Tilting his head a bit, Sunstream kept a watchful eye upon their leader. She had lost her mate, then her medine cat and now her deputy. He assumed being a leader was rough... And the more he saw, the more he believed he had been in the right. Taking in a deep breath through the nose, he finally pushed himself up to his paws and padded toward the throng of cats, settling himself down there to gaze up at Sequoiastar.
Another would rise to the challenge and he had to admit he was curious to see as to whom would be the one to take up the spot. Though he for a moment had amused the idea of becoming deputy himself, he quickly disregarded it. He did not feel like he would be capable of eventually leading a group of cats. Not yet. Not now. There were others far more suited.
The passing of Orcasong made it four. Four cats had already died in SkyClan's short existence. Three of those had impacted the clan, but none moreso than Orcasong and Chicoryfrost. With Chicoryfrost's passing, a new medicine cat was appointed by his predecessor - Brightowl was a fine cat, and Quinn enjoyed spending time with him. With Orcasong's passing, however, it brought on the need for a new deputy.
Quinn, of course, knew that she wasn't a candidate, even if the idea of it excited her a little.
She wasn't even a proper warrior - she couldn't hunt or fight for the clan, but she was still a member nonetheless. She made sure their food was fresh, looked after the kits, tutored the apprentices, and generally made sure the upkeep of camp was to a proper standard. She would never be Quinnstar (how silly that sounded!), but it was exciting to find out who would, perhaps, be the leader after Sequoiastar.
Quinn didn't stop the kits from joining the meeting - they were big enough to do so, and she was sure their mother wouldn't mind - it wasn't like this was a particularly morbid meeting,
even with Orcasong's passing. "Oh, I think it's a bit early for that, Seakit," Quinn purred. "You've got some more growing to do, but before you know it, you'll blink and suddenly be Seapaw," the nursery would be empty very soon, which was a bittersweet thought. Quinn had already brought up the idea of kits to Nick again - perhaps when the spring finally arrived, by which time Sequoiastar's brood would be into their training. "But maybe Sequoiastar will make you her deputy," she teased Seakit. "Are you going to follow in her footsteps and be Seastar one day, I wonder."
may your past be the soundof your feet upon the ground / carry on
The loss of Orcasong had been difficult to take.. It had been one of his first serious cases as Skyclan's medicine cat and unfortunately the deputy's condition had worsened too quickly for him to effectively fight it. He didn't blame himself, death was a natural part of life, but he mourned the young she-cat and lamented the difficult time Skyclan was under. He'd added another stone to his herb garden for Orcasong, beside Brinestorm's. However much a shame it was for the clan to lose Orcasong, he could hardly imagine how it felt for Sequoiastar to lose her deputy and friend. It had been his intention to approach his sister and try to press how she was doing. She'd been close to all three recent deaths and he worried for her.
The tom was on his way to the leader's den when she appeared on the monster's wing, apparently intending to start a meeting. Brightowl hesitated and moved to join the rest of the gathering clan, electing to approach Sequoiastar later. His eyes landed on one of Sequoiastar's more recent recruits, Carolina. Apart from a cursory once-over he insisted on giving anyone intending to join Skyclan he'd barely interacted with the she-cat. No harm in fixing that. The medicine cat settled himself beside Carolina, sparing her a terse smile. He knew the apprentices weren't the only ones receiving new names today and was excited to see Carolina fully embrace Skyclan. He remembered the day he became Brightpaw warmly and part of him was eager to see some of that fresh excitement again. It would likely do the clan some good. It took no more than a look to detect the anticipation radiating off the dark she-cat. It made him smile, transforming his somber, scarred face. "No need to contain yourself. I was excited the day I received my new name too." He purred, curling his tail in the air. "I'm expecting you to show those upstarts a thing or two before their dreams start getting too big for their heads." He nodded his head towards the gathering three with a wry smile, Mantispaw, Sparrowpaw and Coyotepaw who would also be getting their names. All three were exuberant and full of life but still had a long way to go, and all three had already been in their share of trouble despite their youth.
The loss of clan mates hit the amicable, love-everybody tom-cat right in the feels. He hadn’t necessarily known Orcasong on an intimate level, but he had cherished and adored her all the same, and felt copious amounts of sympathies for those he could openly see mourning for her too. The walking, talking bleeding heart was looking for a cat to smother (with his feelings and otherwise), but a far simpler occasion presented itself. With a delighted trill Slatefur joined Dahliaheart and greeted the she-cat with a near whole body bump, a cheek rub, and a gentle tap of his tail as it curled to brush her.
”Tough business.” He clucked in a tone absent of his normal cheeky enthusiasm. While his companion examined the leader Slatefur turned his head this way and that to get a read on his clan mates; many look as disposed as he felt, and it was with the upmost disappointment that Slatefur realized he couldn’t possibly cuddle them all at once—he’d have to make rounds later on to give each of the poor dears a squeeze.
With a small grunt, ears twisting towards Dahliaheart, he followed her line of sight to Sequoiastar and pouted. ”So many good choices.” He hemmed and hawed for a moment before, with a tip of his head and a tone that was anything but quiet said ”Anisefur, Beetleclaw, Weaselwhisker, and Shoalclaw have all been here since the beginning and are smart cookies and good, loyal cats.” He praised easily. ”But Webtail really wants it so I wouldn’t quite count her out, either. Beryllium is a good age but—no, nevermind.” Beryllium was…peculiar, but he couldn’t bring himself to say it aloud. ”Oh, and Sunstream is a ravishing ball of sugar, too. Oh I don’t know Dahliaheart, why maybe it’ll even be you! Sequoiastar doesn’t seem to make her decisions based on age, after all.” He bumped her again. Never once did he consider himself.
”I bet she is!” The tabby kitten shouted. It was clear she was far too amped up about her mother calling and meeting, and seeing her up there all proud and important-like. Ashkit was going to go to the meeting whether their kitten sitter, Quinn, allowed it or not. It was of course easier that the adult cat didn’t seem interested to stop her, but it didn’t stop Ashkit from puffing up, tail stick-straight behind her, and huffing a quick ”That’s what I thought!” As she stood in the entry way of the nursery before hastily turning and barreling out and bee-lining for the crowd as if Quinn were hot on her heels.
She made a round, pestering warriors mostly, before eventually circling back to where Seakit was with, dun dun dun, Quinn. She eyed the brown tabby she-cat a moment before creeping closer. ”Nuh-uh! She’ll be Seastar over my dead body.” Perhaps not an appropriate thing to say given the cause for the meeting, but Ashkit was mindless. ”I get to be leader first.” She had half a mind to run up to their mother to tell her that, too.
How many stitches do you think it takes to fix a cut that bad?
Seakit and Ashkit tumbled out of the nursery before Chamisekit could even stand. She blinked drowsily and rubbed her paws against her face. Sleep beckoned her but she ignored the feeling and quickly tottered after her siblings. Cats had already gathered beneath the High Wing and she couldn’t help but stare up at their mother. A part of her wished Sequoiastar wasn’t leader because then she could spend more time with them. It didn’t feel fair that they all had to share her with the clan. It felt like Sequoiastar was always doing stuff for their clan mates and didn’t spend hardly enough time with them. However, she did her best to appear unaffected as she squeezed in between her two sisters. Her ears perked when Seakit asked if they were going to be apprentices. Quinn assured them they were too young but Ashkit seemed to have other ideas.
A purr rose in her throat. She loved her siblings but more often than not she felt like she was caught in the middle. “I’ll be leader first just to piss you off,” she laughed and then attempted to nip at Ashkit’s nearest ear. Her eyes glittered deviously and it didn’t even dawn on her that her choice of words may have been thought of as crass to others. “Then I’ll appoint Seakit as my deputy just to rub salt in your wounds,” she added and then stuck her tongue out.
wake me up insideBid my blood to run before I come undone
Anisefur’s ears twitched as Sequoiastar beckoned them all together. She rose without much thought and slowly followed her clan mates beneath the High Wing. They had grown since the days of the mill meetings but more often than not they were met with hardship. Orcasong’s passing was unfavorable especially since it followed shortly after their medicine cat’s death. While the she-cat may have been young, she was diplomatic and compassionate. She had complimented their leader well even if she tended to be more passive. Anisefur was curious to see who would be named next and she, unlike some of her clan mates, didn’t believe that naming a deputy by moon high was too soon. They needed to fill the position as quickly as possible in her opinion.
Eventually she found a spot beside Beetleclaw. It was natural and felt right even though she was still internally struggling with their relationship. There was a mere whisker length between them and she casually draped her tail over her paws. She stood a little higher and gave the tom a side-eyed glance. “Despite our losses I think we’ll grow stronger after tonight,” she murmured. Several apprentices would become warriors and they would help bolster their borders (and hopefully push them out further).
Give the bruises out like giftsImpress the empress, take a shot now
If Shoalclaw feared anything it would likely have been disease. A cat couldn’t physically fight an illness. There was no sure way to gain the upper paw. A medicine cat could, she supposed, combat it with their strange herb concoctions but even that could only help so much. It was frightening to think that Orcasong, strong and healthy days ago, had dwindled into nothing more than a fragile sack of bones and fur. The sickness ate her from the inside out and now Skyclan was left without a deputy. A part of her (perhaps selfish) was concerned that the disease would spread and that more cats would fall victim but everything appeared fine. The thought still niggled at her and she was wary of spending time within Brightowl’s den. She had already been there when her wounds were treated and they were still healing (and in need of a daily checkup).
Despite her hidden fears she was also concerned about her son, Coyotepaw. Orcasong had been his mentor and she was certain that the pair had bonded in some manner. Her son was strong but he was certainly stubborn. The calico didn’t overlook his subtle body language and she hobbled over toward him (her shoulder and toe were still giving her some discomfort). She didn’t speak and instead took a seat beside him; her tail draping over his lower back (if he would have allowed).
you're the fear, i don't careonly you can set my heart on fire
Sparrowpaw looked over at the High Wing as their calico leader called them together. It was shortly after their deputy’s death and a new one needed to be named. She blinked slowly and sat back as her clan mates slowly pooled into their gathering space. Her eyes found Coyotepaw’s bulky form within the crowd and she felt her chest tighten. Orcasong had been his mentor and if they established any sort of relationship, she couldn’t begin to fathom how he was feeling. The tom had been there for her when she lost her father and she wanted to do the same for him but didn’t quite know how. She possessed emotions despite her deadpan expression. The problem was that she didn’t know what each little sensation (each feeling) meant. It felt like her heart was being squeezed and her stomach was unsettled. However, before she could begin to formulate some sort of plan to help her friend, she noticed that his mother drew up beside him. It felt wrong to approach but she couldn’t help but watch as Shoalclaw draped her tail over his back. Would that soothe him?
Sparrowpaw began to walk and decided that it would be better to let Shoalclaw be there for her son in this instance. Maybe, if she had enough courage, she would approach him later. Instead she chose a seat beside her mentor (who had become somewhat of a father figure to her). She dipped her head and then sat down. Her gaze lifted back up to Sequoiastar as she waited for the meeting to begin.
in a coat of goldor a coat of red, a lion still has claws
Hollypaw huffed irritably when Sequoiastar’s voice dragged him out of his sleep. He had been napping and didn’t appreciate being disturbed. However, his clan mates were already trickling out of their dens and it left him rather alone. Internally he was somewhat excited to see what the meeting would be about and who would replace Orcasong. He could never allow his clan mates to see his innermost feelings, though. Instead he appeared nonchalant about the whole ordeal as he took his time. Once he dismounted from the plane’s belly, he sifted through the throng of cats. The young tom had a problem when it came to making friends. He was abrasive and didn’t trust easily. He was much better at instigating quarrels instead of forming comradery with his fellow clan mates. In fact, if he had it his way, he and his father would have been long gone by now.
The ruddy tom sniffed and raised his chin haughtily as he made a beeline toward Brightowl. His father had become an important asset to Skyclan (much to his dislike). Hollypaw plopped down and didn’t once acknowledge Carolina. “How do you even know she’s going to become a warrior?” He grumped, still not sparing a glance in the she-cat’s direction.
have i always loved you?have i always known? / have i always loved you alone?
Mantispaw was still trying to figure out how he felt about it all. Become a warrior and everything. A part of him, the part that he readily accepted life in Skyclan, was excited. He was taking on a new life, new responsibilities, and he was to be one of the first apprentices made a warrior in Skyclan's lifetime. However anxieties still made the tom wary. The ceremony felt an awful lot like committing, even more so than he had first been expected to as an apprentice. It wasn't as if he had anything better to do and truthfully Mantispaw couldn't imagine leaving, but was Skyclan the place for him? He hoped becoming a warrior would be exactly what he needed to make him feel part of the clan. Less on the outside looking in.
The smoky tom looked around for his father as the clan gathered but he wasn't immediately in view. The tom felt a pang of loneliness but powered through, searching for another familiar face. Coyotepaw was nearby and looking strangely despondent, not that anyone could blame him. Sparrowpaw was beside her mentor and it seemed like a smart way to go, but as he looked around he found Anisefur already had company and shied from approaching his own mentor when she already had more favorable company. He padded past his mentor, recently groomed fur gleaming and paused briefly beside Coyotepaw. Though he felt for the tom, showing sympathy was not Mantispaw's style, particularly not around Coyotepaw. "You want to do her proud, yeah? Try not to mess up." In a lot of ways he saw Coyotepaw as Orcasong's legacy, the only apprentice she'd ever trained, and he would hate to see the tom chicken out of that. Jabbing at Coyotepaw was the only way he knew how to converse with the tom and it hadn't let him down before. The jibe was meant to be comforting, or at least shake that stumpy look off the tom's face but Mantispaw stalked on before he or his scary mother had time to say anything about it. He took a seat alone near the front of the crowd, curling his tail over his paws and trying not to look lonely on the day of his ceremony.
She's like a cat in the dark &then she is the darkness. she rules her life like a bird in flight
Sequoiastar watched as her clan gathered beneath the High Wing. She may have been tired and emotionally drained but seeing their faces—new and old—made her heart swell with pride. It was a feeling she hoped she would never lose. Each and every one of them meant a lot to her. The calico curled her tail around her paws and watched as her children tottered out into the clearing. The gaggle positioned themselves beside Quinn and she smiled down at them. She waited a bit longer as several stragglers joined the group before she began. “It feels far too soon for me to appoint another deputy. Orcasong was a steadfast clan mate, kind and perceptive, with more patience than I could ever hope to attain.” She smiled fondly as she pictured her friend. “However, Skyclan cannot be without a deputy and the code dictates that I name one before Moon-High.”
The calico took a breath and her gaze swept across the encampment. There were many potential candidates but someone stuck out among the rest. She couldn’t quite place it but calling his name felt right. “I say these words before Starclan, so that the spirit of Orcasong may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of Skyclan is Weaselwhisker.” Sequoiastar smiled and her warm gaze rested upon the tom.
