ABOUT

Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!

SITE NEWS

UPDATES - 01/19/18 An activity check is up here. It will run until Tuesday the 30th of January.

UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.

In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.

UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.

UPDATES - 01/10/18 Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.

UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D

UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.

UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!

UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.

UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!

UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).

UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.

UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.

UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.

UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.

UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.

INTRODUCTION
welcome
Before being able to fully join and enjoy DitM, you must first create a bio (or application, whatever you prefer) for their character. Not only will you need to make and have one accepted before you can RP your first character, but you'll also need to make a bio for every character after. Often times, people find themselves getting stuck, whether it be because of confusion or not knowing where to start. This helpful little guide covers all the basics and gives you a good idea of do's and don't's for those who are stuck.

---

Before making your bio there are several things you should do before moving to the application process, and this mostly applies to new members. Before even thinking about making a character, you want to read the site rules. Once you have a clear understanding, you can move to Bans and Bribes, where there are lists of cats you should and cannot make. These vary depending on how many cats we have in certain clans (info like that can be found on the census just below the header). Bribes offer you the opportunity to create a cat and get rewarded for it, as we are in need of cats on that list and are willing to give you extra points to buy things from the shop in order to get those cats.

After having a vague idea of the cat you want to create, you should then move to the site plot, site history, and meet the clans . These things will help you when coming up with your cats history, and meet the clans should allow you to align your cat well with the demographic expected (or get a little creative).

Alternative: While some people want to start fresh, others don't know quite where to start. If you have no idea of a cat you want to make, look through the adoption board, where you can check out cats related to already accepted characters. This gives you a chance to have a mini-plot already set up for you which can lead to easy assimilation into the site. Just make sure, if you choose this route, that you ask for the user's permission before making the character you want!

**When going to post your bio, be sure to make the title your character's name, and the description your character's gender, clan, and rank. This can be mixed up some as long as all parts are included somewhere visible in the title/description.

Example:

Title: Jackalope
Description Male, Clanless Loner

Example Bio
The bio below is an example of an acceptable minimum. That means that this is the amount of work you must put into your bio at the very least unless you would like to have staff ask you to add more. Also note that the content is also something that would be accepted.

Lastly, keep in mind that this cat is completely made up! That means that the images, name, and anything related to this cat are free to use. You can't copy anything, of course, but if you would like to use the name or images for your own cat, go right ahead.

Appearance

» An averaged size she-cat with a medium length white pelt and dark colored eyes.

Pesonality
and i'll be your gold.
Sharp→ Cloudfoot is sharp and good at picking up on non-verbal cues. She's talented at reading cats as she is understanding a situation or picking up on a mood change. And while she may not be the best communicator, she's talanted at understanding others and being the quiet but watchful observer.

Optimistic→ She is typically a very positive and cheerful person. Her attitude always lightens the mood of whatever conversation she's having. The fact that she always sees the best in situations instead of the worse is what makes it easier for her to keep going, even in the bleakest of times. She's always determined to find a way to make things work, and never gives in without a valiant effort.

Clumsy→ Even as a young warrior, Cloudfoot shows a lot of promise. That being said she is naturally very clumsy. Whether it be bumping into others or forgetting that her white pelt sticks out like a sore thumb against the green undergrowth of the forest during a hunt. She's known most commonly for tripping over her own paws when she's either not paying attention to where she is going or is particularly excited about something.

Socially Awkward→ She can read other cats easily and understand the reasons behind their actions/behaviors, however she's not very good and getting close to others or making small talk. She's not much of a hands on learner, never has been, and has preferred observing as her way of learning. That being said, watching others communicate hasn't helped her do so. Luckily, the friends she does have don't mind too much and are willing to take her for the awkward cat she is.

Family
to have and to hold
Mother: Snowtail, a white she-cat. {DECEASED}
Father: Rabbitwhisker, a light brown tabby tom. {ALIVE, NPC}
Sister: Harekit, a brown and white she-cat. {DECEASED}

History
a lover of the light
♦ Cloudkit is born with her sister Harekit during the tail end of a warm newleaf.

♦ Harekit, the smaller of the two sisters, gets sick. The Medicine Cat does everything they can, but Harekit grows too weak and passes away.

♦ Cloudpaw becomes an apprentice as the warmth of greenleaf begins to fade and is assigned to a dashing she-cat named Tigerstripe. Their personalities clash at first but they become incredibly close.

♦ Tigerstripe gets injured in a hunting accident and is forced to retire, but she deems Cloudpaw ready to be assessed. Only a couple days later, Cloudpaw receives her name, Cloudfoot, in honor of her agility.

♦ Rabbitwhisker chases a squirrel up a tree, only to trip in his efforts and fall to his death. Cloudfoot remains in mourning to this day.

I. Stock Images
please read carefully
One important thing to note before you decide to choose an image for your cat is that on DitM, we only allow members to use stock images, or images whose owners have given explicit permission for free usage (if given permission you will need proof such as a screen shot or an email that says you may use their photos. Some good, risk-free places to start looking are freephotobank, this blog, this blog, and sobi, where all images are free for you to use.

deviantart also has stock images. You must either manually search for these images or otherwise select 'resource and stock images' under the category section on the left hand side. Many stock images on DA are labeled for use on DA only so, if going the DA route please check and double check that owners are okay with their photos being used off-site.

However, what is perhaps the most preferred website to use is flickr, which is trickier. In order to get only stock images, you must use an advanced search with creative commons selected. This is a link that will take you to a safe search, simply type whatever you're looking for into the search bar, and browse to your heart's content! If the link doesn't work, however, all you have to do is click 'advanced search' below the search bar, scroll to the bottom of the page, and check in everything having to do with creative commons/copyright.

Found an image you like? Great! Now all you need to do is check to make sure your image is stock. You can find the answer underneath the image.

There, you might find words such as 'Some Rights Reserved' or 'All Rights Reserved'.

All Rights Reserved images are automatically off limits UNLESS you ask the photographer to use them and they give it to you. Don't be afraid to ask someone for permission for an image, either. It never hurt to send them a personal message explaining that you'd like to use the image! And if that's something you're not comfortable with, you can always ask an admin if they could help.

As for 'Some Rights Reserved' images, you have to be careful.

Images with the = symbol mean that anyone who uses the image cannot 'adapt' the image. While slight modifications (or adaptions) are fine, i.e. cropping and resizing, not all edits are. Flickr defines modifying an image to be to the point where so much has been changed that you could copyright the image yourself, so while images with the = symbol are allowed on DitM, they do come with some restrictions. Feel free to crop, resize and even play around with a bit of layering and text, however, we can not allow them to be used in full on manipulations as that goes against flickr's licensing.

If you're still unsure whether or not your image is user-friendly, click on the copyright information, and it should take you to a creative commons page.

Of course, if you ever get confused or lost along the way, staff members are here to help you. Check with one if you are unsure, as it's better to catch it early on than when you've become very attached to the image!

Lastly, keep in mind that some images are very popular. Only one person can use a certain image set at a time. Please check our rosters and ask around to see if a certain image is in use before putting it into your bio. Staff has the right to tell you to change it if the image you choose is in use.

Reminder: Before putting an image into your bio, you need to crop and resize it. You can do this on websites like photobucket, pixlr, or using programs like Paint that come with most computers. Tinypic is an option, but we do not recommend it, since it often mixes up images with other random ones. If you need help resizing your picture at any point, members are always willing to help if you ask around in the chat, and we also have a thread where you can learn how to properly resize images and get help from staff on doing so.

II. Cat Name
the first step
This can be a tough decision for some people. And when in doubt, ask for another opinion. The safest options are, of course, names you'll typically find in the Warriors Books. Anything from Bracken and Bramble to Leopard and Russet. Typical suffixes are also something to fall back on, ones such as tail, whisker, foot, or nose. In order to help you, we've provided a naming guide for those who are stumped or unsure if their name would be acceptable. You can find the help here. Not every name we accept is on our list, though, so if you're really unsure, just ask.

Two-leg related names are limited to fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices and animals - things like car, tire or blanket will not be tolerated. Sea themed names are limited to shallow and shore dwelling plants, animals, geological landmarks and phenomenon. The cats would have no interaction with deep-sea dwelling animals that aren't spotted near shore, therefore those are not acceptable as names.

In general, Clan cats are given a prefix at birth (or shortly after) based on their appearance. Note that prefixes are given based on dominating features, not on small ones, and are never given for eye color, as eyes do not open for some time after birth and are always blue for a short time after that. On rare occasions, prefixes may be given in honor of a relative or an important cat, but again this is very rare, and if you want to go this route you should probably consult staff. Suffixes are given upon becoming a warrior (or a medicine cat), and relate to the cat's personality, talents, or appearance. It is easy to get into the habit of going after suffixes that represent a talent; don't think your cat always has to be particularly talented in one area over another. Sometimes those cats who are average and have average names are the ones that come up and surprise you in the end (I'm sure you could come up with several examples from the books or characters you've seen or played in the past). Just having a -fur or -pelt suffix as opposed to -nose or -claw or -whisker is perfectly fine.

When creating your cat's name, you should perform some of the same basic tests you'd do if you were naming a dog or a child. Say the name out loud. Shout it like they're in danger and you're trying to warn them. Say the name in various other contexts; if it sounds absolutely ridiculous in any of these, you might want to reconsider. Also, remember that these names have to be called out in battle, to warn of a predator, etc., and cats' names aren't abbreviated in those instances. A good rule of thumb is four syllables total, and though your cat's name can be longer, it's generally a good idea to keep it short and sweet.

You can see our name guide for ideas here. This is not a complete list of the names we allow, and is only meant to help generate ideas.

III. Name Reasoning
the logistics division
Choosing a name is one thing, but then your next step is to explain how this name fits your cat. If your cat is clanless, either a loner, rogue, or kittypet, then this doesn't necessarily apply as much.

Prefixes:: Prefixes are typically based on physical appearances. They range anywhere from the color of a cat's fur to the goofy way they act. In this case, eye color is not a reason, as cat's don't open their eyes right away and when they do, they are always blue.

Example A: Tiger- named after his brownish fur and dark stripes that resemble the great cats of TigerClan.
**Good! Appearance based reasoning, understandable explanation.

Example B: Leaf- named after her beautiful emerald eyes.
**Uh-oh! Not where you want to go. Instead, perhaps think about comparing her pelt to the color range of leaves during leaf-fall!

!Example C!: Rain- he was named rain because he was born during a rain storm.
**Uh-oh! Also a bad road. We typically would prefer you not give your cat a circumstance-based name like this. Some cases work, but ones about the weather don't fly too well. Instead, think of Rain as being named after his gray fur, the color of rain or rainclouds during a storm.

!Example D!: Broken- named because this is how her mother feels about all the rest of her kits dying.
**Big uh-oh! This is what we like to call a punishment name. While these are allowed, we don't recommend them. Under normal circumstances, mothers would not give their kits cruel and unusual names, as their kits did nothing wrong. Try to avoid this whenever possible.

Suffixes:: Suffixes give you more wiggle room to explain the reasoning. They can be features of a cat (i.e. stripe, foot, fur, pelt, etc), though we encourage you not to give the name after your cat's appearance and instead name them after their skills or personality. Names like heart or stride give a stronger feel for what your cat is like.

Example A: Rabbitpelt- pelt to accentuate his cropped brown fur.
** This is a-ok! Nothing's wrong with going traditional!

Example B: Oakshine- shine after her bright and warm personality and her willingness to care for others.
** Also good. Names like shine and heart are always good to define a strong personality, if that is what you wish to be known about your cat.

Example C: Hawktalon- talon after her sharp hook and exceptional hunting ability.
**Great! Different things relating to teeth and claws often relate to hunting or fighting skills, which some characters may be gifted at.

V. APPEARANCE
hotties
Though appearance requirement is only one line, you're more than welcome to discuss your cat's appearance in depth. Here are a few things you might want to add if you're looking to explore your character's appearance:
  • Pelt Color and Design (stripes, spots, etc)
  • Eye Color
  • Fur length/type (long, short, sleek, scruffy, etc.)
  • Overall size
  • Body type (broad, petite, etc)
  • Musculature (wiry, bulky, etc)
  • Skills/abilities (hunting, tracking, fighting, etc)
  • How they carry themselves (confident cats stride, shy cats might hunch, etc)
  • Any peculiar abilities or features
Remember to have an eye for detail and really bring out your cat's greatness.

This link is also helpful when creating your character or looking for specific coloration/pelt types.

VI. Personality
! helpful links ahead !
Personalities can be one of the most fun parts of the bio, if you let it be. Don't be afraid to go all out, and add in as many traits as you like. It's always good to start with two positive traits and two negative traits if you're still figuring out your character. Just remember, your character needs to be balanced! That means that they should have their goods as well as their bads, and one shouldn't really outweigh the other.

Example A: Cloudfoot is friendly, smart, honest, and diligent.
**Uh-oh! While those are all valid traits, they are only positive. This is where you need to balance the character and add in a few negatives, maybe she's also stubborn, fussy, finicky, and arrogant.

Example B: Cloudfoot is sharp, optimistic, clumsy, and awkward. **Good! There are both positive and negative traits that balance her character out.

Balancing your character's traits is one thing, but first you have to decide on the traits. There are plenty of personality types and traits out there, and references to help you. Below, you can find a few links that may do you some good.

VII. History
the fun stuff
Histories are the story of your character from past until present. They often begin with infancy, or just before. Some members like to begin with ancestors of their character and go from there while others may begin at the point the character remembers being. An easy way to do your history is by breaking it up into sections. For example, for a warrior you may consider breaking it up like this -
  • Kithood
  • Apprenticeship
  • Warrior Duty
  • Current
and begin filling in the sections with what happened during those points in your characters lives. Remember to be creative! What happens in your character's past can build who they are, so don't be afraid to branch out and see where this can take you.
  • Kithood - Parents, place of birth, other siblings, interactions in the nursery with siblings and others as well, first thoughts upon leaving the nursery and playing in camp, any trouble they caused.
  • Apprenticeship - How they prepared for their ceremony, what they felt and thought, who was their mentor - did they like them?, their training and any hardships they encountered or major events
  • Warrior Duty - Getting their warrior name (did they like it, what did they do to earn it), new freedoms and responsibilities as well as any apprentices, battles, hardships, love interests or major events
  • Current - what your character is up to currently

For clanless cats, you have more freedom, so take advantage of it. Write all about the crazy adventures your cat went on or home life for your kittypet.

Content & Trigger Warnings

Histories are the place where you can write out everything your character has been through, and like people, some have suffered a variety of negative events. We want to give you the freedom to make your characters how you would like to make them, but we do have a couple of requirements for you to follow/consider as you are writing your characters.

The requirement that you have to follow is trigger/content warnings (a list follows later in the paragraph). Our users all have real lives, and while we all hang out and have fun together, we don't necessarily know what is going on or has gone on in each other's lives. Out of respect for all current and future members, tws/cws are required for sensitive topics including but not limited to: death, gore, abuse of any kind, homophobia, transphobia, incest, murder, suicide. If staff asks you to add a warning to your bio, you are expected to comply. Our policy is to list all the relevant tws/cws at the top of a bio, before the first dohtml tag, and then to bracket any paragraph/s with the triggering material with separate warnings at the beginning and ending of the paragraph/s.

On sexual assault: As of 01/10/18, sexual assault is no longer allowed in bios on DitM. Staff has reached a decision that it is simply not something we can justify allowing in any amount with a PG-13 rating - lots of things can happen or be hinted at happening off-screen in that type of movie/show/book/etc., but we're just no longer comfortable having that material on site. Those members with characters who have references to this kind of material in existing bios are encouraged to remove these details.

VIII. MISC (Alignments)
more links
Your bio should be smooth sailing after you finish all of the big sections. What's left are the simple things on the front of the bio. Rank, Gender, Age, and Clan are straight forward, though alignment may be confusing. Below are a couple links explaining the different alignments there are and what they mean.

IX. Freestyle Bios
the alternative
Along with the bio pictured above, referred to as our 'Detailed Bio', DitM will be offering a Freeform Bio as well. The freeform bio will be nearly identical to the one above with only difference -- the 'guts' will be missing. In this case the 'guts' is referring to the titled sections 'Appearance', 'Personality', 'Family', & 'History'. Rather then completing each individually the freeform bio lets you tackle that any way you see fit. Many people get creative here and do it much like an interview with questions that their character answers IC or even a first-person point of view with their character telling a story if you will.

Staff will not mandate how these bios are done, but we do ask that each of the sections (appearance, personality, family and history) get touched upon. You will need a minimum of 500 words in order to be accepted.

Examples Below

Ermineflight - Lotusfire - Whitecrane
