Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!
UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.
In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.
UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.
UPDATES - 01/10/18 Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.
UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D
UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.
UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!
UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.
UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!
UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).
UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.
UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.
UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.
UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.
UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.
A two-leg city sits both north and south of the clans. One surrounded by forest while the other sits near the sea. Both are typical as far as cities go; mid-sized with daily traffic in and out as two-legs commute to their jobs. The largest buildings are in the center while two-leg homes, where the kitty-pets live, are on the fringes. Monsters and cat-catchers prove a problem for stray and feral cats so wits must be kept sharp when prowling the streets and alleyways. City cats survive off human scraps, mice, birds, squirrels and even rats when kitty-pet food cannot be located. While some city cats may be helpful – friendly even – not all are.
This is the house that Boo shares with Dragonfly, his human Elaine, and his two dog "parents," Buckeye and Trixie. The house is settled on the outskirts of the city south of ShadowClan territory and is down the street from Frankie's house. The backyard is fenceless--open and grassy--and not far from a forest, so it's easy enough to get to the house that way. Elaine often keeps the door open so that her animals can come and go, so cats could enter the house at their own risk. Any threads may be interrupted by: Boo, Dragonfly, Elaine, Trixie, or Buckeye. Within the board, there is a picture of the house's layout as a reference. For any specific questions or clarification, please message Rainbow.
The park lies at the heart of the two-leg city and is a piece of the wild nestled in an urban setting. Walkways are often crowded with two-legs and their children by day, but at night the lamps come on and the two-legs vanish into their dwellings. Two-legs pose a real threat during the daylight hours, but after the sun goes down ferals and strays come to the park to hunt—many of them live within it, even. The grass, clumps of bushes and trees, and pond all provide different types of pre while trashcan and sidewalks provide bits of two-leg meals and scraps. A small jungle gym and sandbox sit within the park’s boundaries and, when not filled with two-leg children, are a hot hang out for cats.
The zoo is entirely too enticing for its own good. Unique sounds, smells and sights from exotic and wild animals, as well as those food smells and the promise of a full belly—who could blame the local strays from venturing in? The zoo keepers, that’s who. Stray animals are strictly forbidden in most instances and humane live traps are not at all uncommon on the grounds. During daylight hours the zoo is almost always flooded with a sea of two-legs, but at night—when things quiet down and empty out—it becomes prime time for digging through the trashes, find morsels on the ground, investigating the enclosures, and perhaps getting yourself in trouble. The zoo has plenty of risks associated with it so enter with caution!
The sewers, located beneath the cities, are accessible from many entry points located on the edges of streets and by some waterways. They aren’t the most attractive of settings, but provide relative safe passageways for cats to travel around the city unhindered by both two-legs and monsters. Small nooks and offshoots provide some form of shelter while rats, mice, and the odd two-leg pet offer forms of prey. The sewers don’t come without danger though. Large swarms of rats and sudden floods are quite common and can easily overwhelm and sweep a cat away.
A pretty pond surrounded by frangrant, overhanging flowers, bushes and stones. This beautiful clearing and its surroundings are rich in various plants; moss, flowers, and herbs alike. The easy availabilty of food and water attracts an abundance of prey species from around the territories, but the seemingly perfect pond also holds the danger of larger, more dangerous animals, many of which can easily kill or maim a cat, being attracted by the fresh, clear air, delicious, plump prey and pretty, clear water that the clearing boasts. Thankfully, most visitors who choose to come here are more interested in the easy rabbits than a fleeing cat.
The beach sits west of the northern coastal city and runs for some length before cliffs spiral off in sudden sharp inclines. The beach can get busy during the warmer months, but offers plenty of hiding spots and habitat for cat, prey, and predators alike. The ocean comes with inherent dangers—mainly currents, large waves, and predators—but for those who can swim and fish it’s host to a wide variety of sea prey, too. The nearby rocks and grasses primarily house small rodents and reptiles, but occasionally (during nesting season) seabirds can be found as well. A local favorite is the colorful puffin.
It isn't known how long ago twolegs lived at this nest. The walls are unsteady, the roof has collapsed in on itself, and the stench of twoleg is long gone. Used by many a cats to shelter in during a storm, it can be dangerous - one wrong move on a wobbly wall, and it could be a tomb.
The forest covers a large portion of surrounding unclaimed land and provides an overwhelming majority of prey and coverage for those that travel outside of the city boundaries. Two-leg roads, railways, and even clan territories slice into it so traveling clanless cats must be wary. Prey species range from rodents, to rabbits, to birds with the odd amphibian and reptile thrown in there with a healthy selection of abundant predators too.
In the middle of the forest (above), a little cottage is home to an old woman named Betty. She is known to all the cats living in the area as an important resource if shelter or food elude them. Betty loves cats, and will always leave food out for strays and invite them to shelter in the sheds on her property. Occasionally, she will take strays into her home and adopt them. Even this sanctuary is not without its dangers, however; Betty does her best to protect the cats here, but she can't be everywhere, and it isn't uncommon for a raccoon or an opossum to come sniffing around the food.
This part of the river is a no man's land, open to any cat without a Clan to fish or swim. Many species call this river home, including carp, perch, bass, and even pike, whose teeth might be a little more dangerous. Swimming is manageable in some parts of the river, but there are a few small waterfalls and faster-moving areas that make swimming a risk. Sometimes Twolegs can be seen in or around the river, kayaking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, etc. There are no motor boats, however, because the river is narrow enough and has enough changes in level to make them dangerous. Traveling along the river will lead to an encounter with the Clans, as this river does wind through most of the territories.
The river's most powerful falls/rapids area is also the site of an old abandoned papermill. In years past, the mill used the rushing water for power for its operation. Unfortunately, the humans running the place took little care for their employees, and the mill shut down prematurely due to a number of work-related accidents and fatalities. Now, the three-story stone building is still in fairly good condition and provides shelter and prey in the form of small rodents for a number of Clanless cats. They are pretty safe here, with a low frequency of predator encounters due to the constant presence and strength of cat scent. Rats can be a problem, though, and every so often a small group of humans will come, set up equipment, creep around the place and generally make a lot of noise. They are looking for ghosts of deceased mill workers, of course, but all the cats know is that when the Twolegs show up, they need to scram.
The Oasis is a rare marked territory within the norther stretches of neutral land, and claimed by the two young loners Waterbug and Lyra. Despite their youth the two are willing to defend their home when necessary, and it’s plain to see why they would—the Oasis is a lovely hide-a-way pool that’s stocked with fish, fed by a small creek, comes complete with scenic waterfalls and sun-warmed rocks to lay on, and high-cliff walls that provide protection on all fronts. The pair nest in a shallow cave near the pool.
