Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!
UPDATES - 3/19/18 Thank you thank you to everyone who took the time to audition for RiverClan deputy. After much deliberation we congratulate Mountainfang (Mink) on getting the position! Remember ThunderClan deputy is still open for auditions, and WindClan deputy will be again in the near future! We still have some medicine cats looking for apprentices, too (if interested PM the medicine cats!).
UPDATES - 3/17/18 A big thank you to everyone who applied to and showed interest in the WindClan deputy position. After discussing the characters and proposed plots we congratulate Jackdawclaw (Yazsh) on getting the position. If you have any questions or would like help with your next audition you can send staff a PM or DM. If you missed out we encourage you to apply for RiverClan deputy before the deadline on March 19th and for ThunderClan deputy. WindClan deputy auditions will open up again in the near future, so keep an eye out!
UPDATES - 03/16/18 RiverClan deputy audition deadline is Monday March 19th! Please get auditions in before then if you're interested in trying out for the position. If you think you may need more time speak to staff asap and the deadline may be extended. Also, we have an activity check running until March 31st, so make sure and post in that ASAP!
UPDATES - 03/14/18 WindClan deputy audition deadline is Saturday March 17th! Please get auditions in before then if you're interested in trying out for the position. If you think you may need more time speak to staff asap and the deadline may be extended.
UPDATES - 03/12/18 Okay hold on to your hats my friends! We now have RiverClan and WindClan deputy open for auditions as well. Link to the high rank board to the left as well as in the news blurb below this one. Same rules apply as with TC deputy -- fill out the audition form and send it to all staff members.
UPDATES - 03/11/18 ThunderClan deputy is now open for auditions. Please be sure to read over the high rank info here. If interested in the position please fill out the audition form and send it to staff as well as Madelin. MCA positions are still open (info below). Keep your eyes open for an activity check in the near future too (and hopefully a new skin if Mink can find time to do a banner!). I should add, while not necessary, including plot ideas (even if they are far out) is very much helpful!
UPDATES - 02/28/18 Rainbow has opened a temporary WindClan MCA position and is asking that interested parties be open to them losing the position within a few months so be sure to have plot ideas as to how they lose the position (death, failing to save a patient, etc) and DM (discord) or PM them your ideas and a bit about the character if they don't already exist on the site. Both RiverClan and SkyClan MCA are now open as well, and those interested should PM/DM Madelin and Trick respectively with your ideas, bio links, or a little about the character's personality/history if they don't they don't yet exist on site.
UPDATES - 02/26/18 A nasty case of greencough has taken SkyClan's deputy, Orcasong. Thankfully, it hasn't shown signs of spreading to the rest of the clan yet. Sequoiastar has chosen Weaselwhisker as her new deputy (which will be officially announced during an upcoming meeting along with a few other exciting things for the clan). Also be on the lookout for more news about the war between ThunderClan and WindClan. Staff will likely start a sign up sheet in the next couple of days to assemble patrols once the ThunderClan meeting has progressed a bit further, so please get your cats' responses into that as well as finishing up your Gathering posts. Because of plot progression and the nature of our sandbox roleplay style, both WC and TC deputy positions may be opening up in the near future. We will open auditions and make additional announcements when that times comes, but go ahead and start thinking about exciting plots for your potential deputies and brush up on the requirements of the position, which are located here!
UPDATES - 01/30/18 A very special announcement! Please join us in congratulating Monument on her engagement!
UPDATES - 01/30/18 The activity check is over and those who did not post or speak to staff have been deleted or moved into our inactive group where they will remain for two weeks before being deleted themselves; bios are never deleted, but are instead moved into our archives. If you have been deleted and wish to rejoin please feel free, and if you find yourself in the inactive group you'll have to PM a staff member with links to your bios and threads to have those moved back. All cats have been aged so please check to see if your characters have moved into a new age bracket, or if they are old enough for a rank change (speak to your leader or update directories/names if that's the case). Be sure to check mentors & apprentices to see if anything has changed, and keep in mind staff is turning those who are not reliable with training threads away from both mentoring and receiving a mentor themselves until consistency can be shown. Our site gathering is still going on (it's just gotten started!) so be sure to check that out.
UPDATES - 01/23/18 Site gathering is up here. Please do not post until the leader of your cats clan has. Leaders have the right to deny a cat access to the gathering and will let those who cannot attend know. The gathering can count as one of your active threads for the activity check.
UPDATES - 01/19/18 An activity check is up here. It will run until Tuesday the 30th of January.
UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.
In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.
UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.
UPDATES - 01/10/18Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.
UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D
UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.
UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!
UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.
UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!
UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).
UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.
UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.
UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.
UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.
UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.
It's been a while since Stormstrike has come out to this particular area to hunt.
But camp was becoming stifling. It always seemed stifling, lately, and somehow too empty at the same time. Stormstrike hates the melacholy that comes to him when he spends too long padding around camp with nothing to do, so lately... he's just been coming out to hunt. It gives him something to do with his paws, something to do with his mind. Clear it, or focus it, or do anything besides ponder any of the numerous losses he's encountered over the past few moons. Or, better but still not good, to think about the tumultuous state his Clan is in.
Graystar is... what many WindClanners consider to be a leader that exemplifies everything WindClan should stand for, but Stormstrike isn't certain. While he admires a leader that's tough to the other Clans and takes no bullshit, the hard line drawn in the sand over taking outsiders into the Clan is one that baffles him. Sure, no cat should come in if they seem like they might pose a danger, but if accepting new cats - especially young ones - would ultimately make WindClan stronger, why deny them? After all, if new blood wasn't introduced every once in awhile, wouldn't the entirety of the Clan eventually end up related to each other?
Stormstrike shudders and shakes his head. "Ugh." This is exactly what he'd been trying to avoid, though thinking about his Clan is better than thinking about his family.
The tom refocuses as he catches the scent of a rabbit on the breeze and begins moving after the smell, ears pricked and eyes alert. On the horizon, he pauses, bent low to the ground and eventually spotting the rabbit nibbling digging through some snow about four foxlengths away. Upwind; perfect. It won't scent Stormstrike coming until it's too late, and his pelt lends itself well to snowy climates.
The lilac tom pauses, though, as another scent comes to him. Cat scent. He tenses for a moment, automatically thinking ThunderClan, but after a moment he recognizes the feminine curl on his tongue as WindClan, and, specifically, Wisteriathroat. She must be out here somewhere, too. Keeping his ears alert for her, he continues quickly down the hill, breaking into a full-on sprint for the hare when he gets close enough.
The rabbit notices him a split second too late - its no match for Stormstrike's speed, and he hastily kills the prey. Its scrawny, but WindClan will thank him for it. He lifts his head with the new fresh-kill clamped in his jaws and turns, trying to find his Clanmate's scent again.
Two hunters are better than one, after all. Maybe they can work together.
notes just a good old fashioned hunting thread to get things rolling! | 552 words
the plains were very dark, even though wisteriathroat knew very well it was at least sunhigh. quickening her pace, it wasn't long before she was in a full-blown sprint. where were all of her clanmates? why was the sky so dark? it felt like the air itself was suffocating her and her chest was constricting against the thick mass of fog that lay over the prairie. the last thought wisteriathroat could remember thinking was why there was so much fog and no snow when they were in the dead of leafbare.
jade eyes shooting open, it took a few seconds for wisteriathroat to realize that she was in the confines of the warrior's den, not running through the prairies. it must have just been a dream. getting up quietly so as not to disturb her other sleeping clanmates, the tortoiseshell she-cat made her way out into the main clearing. taking a moment to sit outside of her den, she ran a few rhythmic, soothing licks over her chest fur. there was no point in trying to figure out what her dream meant, she was only a warrior so starclan couldn't have been trying to communicate with her. that was what a medicine cat was for. deciding she just ate a little too much prey before going to sleep the previous night, wisteriathroat shook off the dreadful feelings that were beginning to overtake her thoughts.
glancing at the freshkill pile, she was surprised to see how low it was, even at this time in the season. wisteriathroat also realized how hungry she was herself and decided she would go out for a little solo hunting. maybe that would help her clear her head and keep all of these emotions at bay. giving her pelt one good wash over, the she-cat exited the camp, nodding to the cat who was still on guard from the previous night.
at first, she took the trek at a steady trot, but after a while she knew feeling the wind whip through her short black and red fur would probably make her feel better. soon, she was sprinting across the prairies - much like she had been in her dream - and didn't stop until she was a good distance away from the windclan camp. unlike if it had been greenleaf with the air flooded with prey scent, it took wisteriathroat a couple of moments to pick up the scent of any kind of prey.
realizing she was upwind of the creature, she quietly skirted around the animal in hopes to get downwind of it. just when she decided she was in the right position, she saw a light colored pelt rushing down the hill towards the rabbit she had scented. recognizing the cat as stormstrike, she watches him kill his prey quickly, keeping the bundle of fur clamped in his mouth.
trotting down towards her clanmate, she called when she got into ear shot, "nice catch, stormstrike! are you hunting out here alone, too, or are you on a patrol right now?" wisteriathroat didn't feel up to joining a patrol right now, not with all the racing thoughts taking up her thoughts, but she wouldn't mind stormstrike's company. she had never had any issues with the older tom before.
Stormstrike closes his eyes for a moment and breathes in. The early morning sun is a welcome warmth on his pelt; WindClan cats don't have the luxury of thick fur like most of the other Clans do, so leaf-bare is always a little unbearable for him. Still, it feels good to get his blood pumping and to soak in the rays a little, and with the warm rabbit in his jaws, he figures it will be a good day overall for hunting. He can't scent snow on the wind, anyway.
A moment later, though, he blinks his eyes open again as the familiar voice of Wisteriathroat calls out to him, and the silvery tom sees the pretty calico trotting down the hill towards him. Stormstrike puts the rabbit down and stretches languidly, digging his claws into the sparse grass and loosening his muscles before nodding a greeting.
"Thank you. It seems the prey is not staying hidden today, at least. No, I'm not on a patrol. The weather just seemed pleasant this morning, so I thought a hunt would be good for... clearing my head, I suppose." Stormstrike straightens back up and gently scoops some snow over the top of the rabbit to come back for it later. "Would you like to join me? A patrol during leaf-bare always seems to scare away prey, but two cats should be stealthy enough to still be effective."
The tom nods thoughtfully, tracking his eyes along the edges of the territory. Rabbits are always easier to catch if you can chase one into the arms of another cat; with the pair of them, they should be more successful than Stormstrike would be on his own. Logically, it makes sense. Though he doesn't know Wisteriathroat well, that isn't saying much; Stormstrike doesn't know many of the cats younger than him well, as he hadn't really been focused on making friendships for the majority of his life. Still, the she-cat seems nice enough, if a little uncertain of herself.
Whisking his tail a little, Stormstrike lifts it high and moves closer to Wisteriathroat. "Where do you think we should go?" he hums, happy to let the other cat decide. He's in a contemplative mood today, and fears he might overthink things if he lets himself. And, if he's being honest, he enjoys putting the younger warriors through the paces as he had with his apprentices once upon a time; if it helped keep WindClan sharp for him to stay on his fellows sometimes, he's happy to do it.
notes stormstrike: critical old man mode activate | 514 words
as she reached her silver clanmate, wisteriathroat realized that stormstrike might have intended to be alone if he had come on a solo hunting mission. but she also knew it was too late to turn back now, being that she had already called to him and was only two fox-lengths from him. anxiety and strong sense of extreme awareness over her body kicking in, she shortened the gap between herself and tom and sat down, curling her slender tail around her paws.
a million thoughts were racing through wisteriathroat's head. the nightmare she had just woken from was still haunting her, sending chills down her spine that she could feel all the way to the tip of her tail. thoughts of her deceased brother kept slipping in and out of her thoughts, no matter how hard she tried to force it back to the deepest, darkest crevice of her brain. all of these things juggled inside of her head between the time she called out to stormstrike and reaching him.
taking a slow breath, wisteriathroat was brought back to reality when the silver tom started speaking to her. pricking her ears, she watched as he stretched. "thank starclan for that. before i left, the freshkill pile was pitifully empty." wisteriathroat shifted slightly, aware that he had caught prey and she was sitting around chatting without anything to show for her venture out of the camp. twitching her whiskers, she replied, "very understandable. the weather is very lovely today." she looked around, not willing to admit to stormstrike - much less any cat - about the nightmare she had or the anxiety she was currently dealing with. there was no need to put her burdens on any other cat.
when he asked her if she'd like to join him, she let her jade gaze fall back on him. "sure. it's still early, i'm sure we could manage to scrounge up enough to feed most of the clan!" scenting the air, wisteriathroat wondered what would be the best place to hunt right when stormstrike asked her where she thought they should go. it took all of about half of a millisecond for wisteriathroat to have a miniature meltdown in her head. it didn't feel like she had been a warrior for that long, so having the more experienced one of the pair give her the lead was a pretty decent responsibility.
composing herself, she straightened her tail and tried to sound as confident as possible when she said, "we should probably go over the ridge over there," she indicated the direction with he tail. "there's plenty of rabbit burrows over there, and maybe if we're lucky some prairie dogs will be out with it being as warm as it is." not waiting for her companion, she set off in the direction she had decided on. this was mostly to make it look like she actually knew what she was talking about.
as she made her way towards the ridge, wisteriathroat glanced slightly over at stormstrike and asked, "so what exactly are you clearing your head of, if you don't mind me asking." the she-cat was very good at making the subject of the conversation about the other cat, loathing when the spotlight was on herself.
wisteriathroat seems nervous. even more than normal. or, well... perhaps not nervous. on edge, more like. something was bothering her, he guessed, though he is not certain what to do about it. stormstrike looks over the calico as she shifts on her feet while speaking, her eyes looking around and about, and tries to subtly relax his stance; he tended to loom a little when standing... maybe he was making her nervous.
the silvery tom subconsciously straightens back up without noticing a moment later, though, too many moons of training determined to make sure he constantly looks powerful and his best. the warrior nods along with wisteriathroat as she laments the state of their fresh-kill pile; leaf-bare and the thunderclan thieves had made food harder to find nowadays. today isn't terribly chilly, though, so it appears the prey is coming out to take advantage of it.
but stormstrike won't say so; even he isn't so socially inept as to believe discussion of the weather is interesting for long.
still, he finds the calico's optimism refreshing enough, and he nods along with her. "we will need as much prey as we can in case something happens with thunderclan soon."
there's a flicker of amusement in his chest as he sees wisteriathroat visibly freeze when he asks her where they should hunt, but he betrays none of it on his face. his clanmate quickly composes herself and decides where they should go with confidence in her voice. stormstrike can still see the nervousness in her gait as she begins walking, but stormstrike knows he tends to make cats that way with his demeanor. he just hums agreeably when wisteriathroat explains her choice, huffing only when she's out of earshot and padding after her with his ears up.
a nice, easy hunting pair might be enough to give him a bit of a destress. it would, at least, take his mind off of... everything.
"i believe the same," he hums, and climbs the hill alongside the she-cat, scanning the horizon with sharp yellow eyes.
he only looks over in surprise when wisteriathroat continues speaking.
hm. people never tended to actually ask him what was bothering him these days. it is the norm, and honestly, stormstrike prefers it that way. it was hard to say oh, just thinking about that time i killed my brother without the conversation stalling out a little. stormstrike almost snaps at her to mind her own business, feeling his temper rise under his pelt, but the question had been innocent enough. the silver tom's neck fur bristles for only a moment before he smooths it, and lets out a quiet sigh.
"our clan is descending into something. i am not sure what. war with thunderclan is on the horizon, wisteriathroat. and our leadership has been... tumultuous." he glances over, then shakes out his fur. "i will, of course, be proud to serve our leader through whatever comes," he amends, wanting to make it clear he is loyal to windclan to anyone that will listen, but then quietly continues, "but i imagine why you can see it is... time-consuming. sometimes it is nice to leave camp and... clear one's mind."
it's not exactly a lie. the status of his clan was always on his mind; it had been since he was 6 moons old, his father's voice in his ear. it just... wasn't the entire truth.
but no one could know that.
stormstrike turns his head back to the land in front of them. he flicks his tail over the back of his clanmate as he spots a prairie dog scrambling across the snow a few yards ahead.
"your turn," he murmurs, casting his clanmate a look; a challenge, but mostly a playful one.
competition would get his blood flowing, if wisteriathroat is up for it.
