ABOUT

Welcome to Deep in the Meadow, a literate semi-AU Warrior cats roleplay site with a 200 word minimum. DitM features a sandbox play style, a stat system for character development, staff-run NPC accounts for events and encounters, and an overarching political landscape to help structure characters and interactions. Territories are refreshed, but will remain familiar to Warriors RPers. Play as a member of the four Clans or as a Clanless cat - and enjoy!

SITE NEWS

UPDATES - 01/19/18 An activity check is up here. It will run until Tuesday the 30th of January.

UPDATES - 01/17/18 In light of our near every-clan-wide ban/discouragement on apprentices staff wanted to address a few matters. We all know and can relate to the fact that training threads can get boring quickly, but we want to remind users that they don’t need to be the same old things over and over and over again; training threads can be fun, and the concepts that apply to being a warrior can be presented in fun and new ways. Linked are some threads that staff have themselves participated in that demonstrate a wide variety of different directions to tackle training threads from that range from puzzle solving, critical thinking, assassination attempts, games, and even role playing (patrols and the like can count as training threads too). 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. If you want to request a flash event you can ask a staff member or purchase one in the shop, and if you need help brainstorming ideas ask on our discord—we’re a collection of creative folk and we can certainly help one another out. In keeping training threads interesting and fun we hope to get more people signing up to do mentor.

In the same stroke we staff have also noticed a trend in that some sign their apprentices up for mentors, ask for training threads, but then never respond to them (or take months), and in the end end up purchasing apprentice passes for their apprentices to get their names on time. Going forward staff will request you skip signing up for a mentor (you can npc one instead) and just purchase the apprentice pass to save desperately needed mentors for those who will participate and complete training threads so we aren’t wasting mentors/time.

UPDATES - 01/16/18 Starvation Notices have officially gone out in ThunderClan. To prevent more, and to prevent those who have received them from worsening, get your cats out in patrols and hunting! WindClan, not far behind ThunderClan, is officially on notice of starvation, too. Don't be like ThunderClan and put off hunting threads until it's too late.

UPDATES - 01/10/18 Staff has made a slight rule change. You can find this change noted on Rule #17 on the rule sheet, and explained in more depth on the bio guide (specifically the 'history' post, which is linked in Rule #17). Direct any questions to staff. Please make sure to read this update.

UPDATES - 01/09/18 Update concerning clans and clanless cats claiming and challenging for territory. Read about that here. As our largest clan on site we're officially giving ThunderClan a starvation warning. No one is starving quite yet, but they have rumbling bellies and an empty fresh-kill pile more often than not. Get out hunting, and not just on your own territory, ThunderClan, or risk finding starvation and illness notifications in your PMs ;D

UPDATES - 01/02/18 Happy New Year! We have a lot going on on site in terms of clan meeting and exciting, drama-filled going ons. Three of our clans have meetings up, and while two are further along than the third they are still in need of reactions to either help wrap them up, or to help their leader in making her decision. Give them a look: WC, RC, & SC. Once some of these big plot threads wrap up you can expect our next site gathering to get underway.

UPDATES - 12/27/17 There has been a change in DitM's staffing team as Cheshire has had to step away to tackle that thing we call life. You can read about that here. The staff team wishes Cheshire all the best, and a huge thank you for all they've done for the site! In light of how busy we still are we've promoted Yazsh, who has been helping the staff team already with mod stuff and flash event posts, to a full member of the staff team. Be sure to give the ma warm welcome and have patience with them as they learn the ropes! With Cheshire leaving that means Palefeather's and Graystar's plots are at a stand still, but since they are all sorts of tied up into the future of the site staff will be taking on the roles for at least a short while to keep things moving smoothly. Please direct all those character's plot questions to us. Rest assured we'll be working with Cheshire if we have questions, and the sand box environment, to see these through! Have patience with staff as well as we figure out what threads need to be done and get a handle on how to best play these characters. Thank you!

UPDATES - 12/24/17 A few days later than the set date, all accounts in the inactive category have been deleted. If that's you, you're welcome to rejoin at any time; staff can always pull things from the archives for you if you would like to remake characters. Just be aware that you may need to change names or face claims if they have been used in your absence.

UPDATES - 12/21/17 A happy Winter Solstice! Our season on site has been changed to Leaf-Bare. The staff team wishes happy holidays for those celebrating!

UPDATES - 12/06/17 The activity check is over and the site has been aged! Those members who did not respond or check in with staff have been moved to the inactive category and will be deleted on 12/20. If you were moved to inactive, just message a staff member with links to the items you need replaced and the accounts you need moved. For those of you still with us, please check characters' ages and active threads so you can claim any new stats. Please also check mentors & apprentices in case you have gotten a new mentor/become a mentor! Finally, many of us need to update our bios, at the very least to reflect name, rank, and sometimes Clan changes. If I have to call people out by name I will ;).

UPDATES - 11/29/17 We have an activity check going on! Link is here. Members have until December 5th to post. Please speak to staff if you don't think you'll be able to post by then. We are doing it a bit differently this time around so please be sure to read the post completely.

UPDATES - 11/15/17 A big thank you for all those who took the time to audition and show interest in ShadowClan deputy. After discussion between Rainbow & staff we congratulate Gillyflowerthroat (Mink) on getting the position. As promised if you have questions or desire tips in preparation for our next open high rank position you can send staff a PM or DM.

UPDATES - 11/09/17 New skin! Staff is still making tweaks to this top table potion (the link colors and navigation link colors) and to staff/site tables, but otherwise please let staff know if you still see any lingering green colors. A deadline has been set for ShadowClan deputy: Tuesday Nov. 14th. If you'd like to try out please send your auditions in before then, and if you think you will need more time be sure to let staff know.

UPDATES - 11/04/17 Auditions for ShadowClan deputy are now open. Audition form can be found in our high rank info board and all auditions should be sent to the staff team + Rainbow. A deadline will be set at a later date.

UPDATES - 11/02/17 Katzen has stepped back from the site and her role as ShadowClan's leader to focus on her senior year of college. To fill members in on what happened ICly with Vulturestar Rainbow has helpfully written a small AU you can read here.

I feel it deep within it's just beneath the skin. i feel like a monster
Piedstar’s decision to hunt in their neighbors’ lands was a risky call. Some supported it, others were against it, and then there were some caught in between. However, what was more interesting to Icetail was how Halfstar and Riverclan responded. They sent their own patrols onto their lands and she wasn’t sure where the one-eyed leader’s train of thought led. It was a curious rabbit hole but she was brought out of her thoughts when Rowanfang approached her. The white warrior listened as he gave her instructions to patrol Fern Gully. Technically, the entire gully belonged to them but Halfstar was quick to point out that they were doing them a favor. Icetail dipped her head respectfully and then turned to see what warriors were milling around camp with idle paws. Her former mentor allowed her to choose who accompanied her and her eyes fell upon Blizzardfang. He was a strong and battle savvy warrior, although, sometimes he had a hard time keeping his emotions in check.

The she-cat strolled over toward him. “Blizzardfang,” she greeted, dipping her head. “Rowanfang would like us to patrol Fern Gully.” The instructions were simple and clear. She didn’t see a reason why the tom would refuse and didn’t feel the need to elaborate. Icetail then turned and led the way out of camp. She wasn’t aware that he was her father. Her decision to take him was because of his strengths as a warrior coupled with the fact that she did not know him well. It was better for her to foster positive relationships with each of her clan mates.

Eventually, the pair padded into the gully. It was riddle with their scent but she was well aware that Riverclan could have been using the piece of territory too. “What do you think about Riverclan’s antics?” she asked casually as she began to rescent Thunderclan’s markers.

Blizzardfang had been doing his best to avoid all contact with both Mistybear and Sleetstorm for several moons. Every now and then, he would get thrown together on a patrol with one of them, but both of the other warriors seemed to be on the same page as he was and politely ignored him in return. It was painful whenever he saw Mistybear, and he grew rather angry whenever Sleetstorm was near. From the outside looking in, no one would be suspicious of the behavior towards the she-cat. Blizzardfang was never a fan of hers, but had eventually grown out of the kit-like taunting. No one suspected a thing.

Unfortunately, Blizzardfang was painfully aware of the mistakes he and Sleetstorm had made. He saw them wondering through camp on a daily basis. They had grown into decent cats, or so he had gathered from afar, so at least they had that going for them. Recently, he felt more of a pull towards his kits, a desire to actually know them, but he couldn't figure out how to initiate contact.

Which is why he was rather pleasantly surprised when one of them, Icetail, approached him one afternoon on her own. Blizzard carefully kept his expression neutral as the young warrior informed him of Rowanfang's wishes. The deputy was certainly not his favorite cat in the clan, but Blizzardfang kept that opinion carefully under wraps. He simply grunted his assent and pushed himself to his paws. "Lead the way, little lady," he said, gesturing with his tail. Allowing Icetail to lead this little patrol would allow Blizzardfang to study her mannerisms a little more closely. She favored him slightly in appearance, while her brothers obviously belonged to Sleetstorm, which made him feel a bit closer to her.

It didn't take long to reach the gully. The pair dipped down into it and continued at a leisurely pace, pausing to refresh the markers on either side. His ears perked up at Icetail's question. Her tone and body language showed nonchalance, but he wondered if she was going to relay the information straight back to her old mentor. He supposed it didn't matter either way, but still took a moment to collect his thoughts. "Well, their leadership situation is a joke obviously, so I guess it's safe to assume that applies to the rest of the clan as well," he muttered dryly. Blizzardfang cast a somewhat amused look over at the she-cat, attempting to gauge her reaction before posing the question right back at her, "Your thoughts?"

The situation with Thunderclan, Halfstar, and a multitude of other things were a bit stressful for Scarletwolf. The ginger molly tried her best to be as optimistic and positive as possible, but the leader's lack of arrival on the border with Vulturestar had rubbed her the wrong way. The way the scraggly tom seemed to brush off leadership duties to remain holed up in his den both concerned the young warrior and annoyed her. It was especially annoying when he refused to meet Shadowclan's leader face to face over the border. It was further frustrating that he so willingly accepted herbs from their enemy clan as if it was nothing.

Despite it all, the molly busied herself with hunting and long walks to keep her mind from wandering too much. She'd talk to other cats or lounge around with close friends of hers to ignore her own gnawing worries. Today, it seemed hunting was her way of clearing up her mind. She was slipping through the Fern Gully and in the process of burying a freshly caught vole when voices and Thunderclan's scent grabbed her attention. The ginger molly flicked an ear upwards and glanced in the direction of the voices.

She remembered Halfstar's words, and let out a quiet sigh. She tilted her chin upwards and happily bounded towards the two Thunderclanners, catching wind of their last few words. "It's not very nice to talk poorly of us on the territory we're letting you use." Scarletwolf said with a small frown, her words kind but... unusually passive aggressive. Damn her nerves.

Another opportunity of a lifetime just slipped away
and that's the fifth this month

Redstripe had spent what felt like an eternity following this damn robin. Every time he got close the stupid bird perked its head up, looked about, and fluttered off a little distance, forcing Redstripe to pause and then sneak forward again, only to have the bird move away once more. It was agonizing. At least if the damn thing flew off he could go off to search for something else, but no, it just had to tempt him along this way, didn’t it?

The robin had finally stopped for long enough for Redstripe to prepare to pounce again. It was pecking at the ground, turned away, an easy kill waiting to happen. Redstripe tensed his limbs, ready to strike… The sound of conversation struck up suddenly nearby and Redstripe perked his ears up and twisted his head in the direction of the noise, distracted. He didn’t recognise those voices. He looked back to the bird just as it flew upwards and disappeared among the branches.

Redstripe made an exasperated clicking noise as he stood up and stretched the tension from his limbs. Ah well, he tried. His attention was already moving on to the ThunderClan cats that he could now see further down the gully. He’d been hunting with Scarletwolf and he really ought to get back to her but it was so much more interesting to listen in on the rival cats’ conversation. His ears pricked up at the ThunderClan tom’s words, but before he could say anything, Scarletwolf appeared to reprimand him. Redstripe grinned as he wandered into view.

“I guess it is true what they say,” he added cheerfully, “they don’t teach manners in ThunderClan.” He beamed at the ThunderClanners as he joined Scarletwolf. “She’s right. The least you could do when you’re insulting a clan on their land is to be subtle. You had my ears burning twenty paces away.”

Redstripe had heard Halfstar’s orders about this area loud and clear. After the scandal of ThunderClan cats being caught hunting in RiverClan territory, RiverClan were encouraged to hunt here and ignore ThunderClan presence. That meant, wonderfully, that Redstripe was under no obligation to fight these cats. Still, Halfstar hadn't said that he couldn't talk to them.

“Anyway, since you’ve scared my catch off, we might as well chat. How’s life, neighbours? Word has it that you’ve gotten sick of your prey, so you’re trying out RiverClan’s diet.” His eyes glinted mischievously. “Seems like our leadership is the reason you're still eating at all.”

Icetail was not necessarily surprised when her clan mate answered her question with such candor. She may not have known Blizzardfang very well but she was beginning to understand how his mind worked. However, it was a mistake to bring up politics so close to the Riverclan border (or was this land now considered a shared portion of their territories?). A ginger and white she-cat bounded up to them and while she appeared to be calm her words were a little passive aggressive. Icetail blinked slowly at her; an apology. The white she-cat didn’t have a lot of experience interacting with cats outside of her clan. She had cordial at gatherings and during border patrols but more often than not she had been a part of those stealing prey (which meant no interaction with their neighbors). It put her in a pressing position as she was, despite her age, considered to be the head of the Thunderclan patrol. Yet, before she could say anything, another Riverclan warrior appeared.

His words were cheeky as he joined his clan mate. Icetail glanced over at Blizzardfang and gently bumped her shoulder against his. Her eyes were light and friendly and she hoped that the tom would mirror her. They were not out to start a fight. Redstripe went on to talk and his last sentence had a bit of bite to it. A part of her wanted to rebel against his words but, in all honesty, they were truthful. “I have to say, the prey on your land is quite delicious,” she purred. “And since we’re being so neighborly, do you think you could teach us how to fish properly?” Icetail winked. “We can teach you how to catch squirrels or in your case, Redstripe, robins.” There was no malice in her voice or gaze. Everything she attempted to project was light and teasing. She hoped to avoid any sort of physical or verbal confrontation.

Blizzardfang waited with bated breath, wondering what Icetail would have to say in response to his opinion. He would have to continue guessing, because a RiverClan warrior chose that moment to rear her ugly head. Blizzrdfang let out an irritable huff, but schooled his features into nonchalance by the time Scarletwolf was close enough to see his expressions. He appeared almost bored as the she-cat began to speak. He really didn't care who heard that particular opinion. It was common knowledge that Halfstar wasn't quite fit to lead a border patrol, much less the whole clan.

He was giving Icetail time to figure out the best way to respond to this sort of situation. this was her patrol, so she would be the one to diffuse any tension. If he found her struggling, then he would step in, but he wanted her to try her own paw at it first. Before she could, however, a second RiverClan warrior joined the party. He seemed much more at ease than his companion, which was a little comforting. The Fern Gully was not up for claim. The two clans grudgingly shared the piece of territory for now because both were instructed not to engage in battle with the other. It was peculiar, but Blizzardfang wasn't about to argue it here. Not with Icetail here. He was pretty sure that she could hold her own, but he would regret putting his own flesh and blood into danger when it could have easily been avoided.

Icetail seemed to sense his bit of hesitation and gently bumped shoulders with him. The touch grounded him, and also completely stole his attention away for several moments. He stared at the place where the she-cat had touched him. He wasn't used to any kind of physical comfort, and this was a member of his family. Blizzardfang recovered quickly, turning back to the RiverClan warriors, but he had missed a bit of the conversation. provoking them wasn't a good idea, but he couldn't help himself. "As I recall, Kestrelstar claimed the entirety of the gully before she croaked. RiverClan has just been too pigeonhearted to take it back," he meowed in a somewhat disinterested tone. He wasn't looking for a fight, merely stating the truth. "Actually, neither of our new leaders seem to know what to do with this stretch of land, so we're sharing it.. for now."

"So, yes, let's be friends and teach each other to do things. It'll be loads of fun!" he exclaimed in forced excitement. His eyes danced with amusement, so hopefully the other cats would see his ploy.

Scarletwolf jumped a little when @redstripe appeared beside her, seeming much more intent on throwing shade at the opposing Thunderclanners than she was. She suppressed a giggle and instead listened to what the charismatic tom had to say. Her attention quickly flickered back to the younger warrior, the one who hadn't been openly bashing Riverclan. Any other cat would be smart enough to not teach enemies how to fish or something like that. Scarletwolf was smart, but she also had a terrible habit of thinking more with her heart than her mind sometimes. Leafbare was just around the corner, and no part of her wanted to see Thunderclan suffer.

"I don't see why that'd be a problem." The tabby mused with a swish of her tail, before turning to her companion. "At the very least it'd stop you from crossing borders or going hungry, no?" She could feel Lionfeather screaming at her for her pathetically weak heart. The comment about squirrels made her ears twitch. "There aren't many squirrels on our territory, but I don't see why that wouldn't be helpful. What do you think?" She, again, turned to her companion.

She almost jumped when Blizzardfang spoke, having almost completely forgotten about him. She uttered a quick apology and her friendly smile faltered a little. "... I wouldn't call us pigeonhearted." She said with a tired laugh. "But, to each their own, I suppose!"

Another opportunity of a lifetime just slipped away
and that's the fifth this month

Redstripe was curious to see how the Thunderclanners responded. He knew his cheek didn’t usually play well with rival clans, but he often got away with it since no one was willing to risk war over a bit of banter. These cats seemed civil enough, the she-cat even gave a friendly wink as she purred back a quip. Redstripe blinked at her words. Then he grinned widely and turned to Scarletwolf.

“I like her,” he commented appreciatively, flicking his tail at the white she-cat. Here was a cat who knew how to handle a bit of good-humoured jesting – by throwing it right back. She had said his name, and Redstripe tried to recall her name and when they’d met. Icepaw, was it? It would have been a while since they’d last spoken though, so he couldn’t make a guess at what she’d be called now.

Meanwhile, Scarletwolf seemed to have taken up the she-cat on her offer. Redstripe’s whiskers twitched in amusement at the thought.

“I think a ThunderClan cat might be more likely to join the fish in the river than to get one onto land,” he laughed and then flicked his tail to indicate their surroundings, “this would be the safest place to practice though. They probably wouldn’t drown in a puddle.” He gave the rival clan cats a sideways look, as if to say he wouldn’t put it past them to find a way to do just that.

The white tom's tone had been a lot less friendly but his final words shifted to a mockingly excited tone. Unfortunately for him, Redstripe was more than happy to play along.

“That’s the spirit!” The red tabby nodded enthusiastically, matching the white tom’s level of excitement with ease. “Just think of the adventures we’d have: the pigeon-hearted RiverClan jokes and the rude ThunderClan thieves!” He waved his tail as if he were setting out a headline. “We’d make quite the team!” He gave Scarletwolf a friendly push with his shoulder, encouraging her to loosen up with him.

“Well since we don’t have squirrels, how about we trade instead? You get back a certain bird that I feel I’m owed-” He gave Icepaw(?) a meaningful look. “and we’ll give you some pointers on fishing.” He glanced at Scarletwolf to see if she’d run with his suggestion. Most of his clanmates gave his ideas short shrift but the ginger she-cat seemed more tolerant than others.

I feel it deep within it's just beneath the skin. i feel like a monster
Blizzardfang was at least trying to be amicable and she appreciated his efforts. A purr welled in her throat as she looked at him and then back to the two Riverclan cats. She could have done without his little pigeon-hearted remark but at least the other two were rolling with the punches. Their clans were at a standstill and it was an odd notion to be sharing land (if it even could be called that). Her tail swished behind her and she tried to hide her surprise when Scarletwolf agreed with her sentiment. Icetail was joking about the trade-off but if the ginger warrior wanted to delve into that realm she would be a willing and patient participant. It would serve Thunderclan well if they learned the age-old Riverclan fishing technique. Perhaps they could put their lake to proper use.

Her gaze drifted over to Redstripe and she quirked a brow at him as he stated that he liked her. You wouldn’t like the real me, she thought absently but her face remained pleasant. “You think so?” she tipped her head to the side and then eyed the tom up and down. “I’m surprised that you haven’t been found at the bottom of the river considering your head is filled with stones,” she teased. Her eyes were bright with humor and once again she thanked the stars that Rowanfang had become her mentor.

Redstripe continued to tease and prod, mostly at Blizzardfang, and she hoped that her clan mate would take it in stride. Icetail pursed her lips when the tom tried to bargain with her. “Hmm. But then you’d receive instant gratification while we have no idea if these so called fishing techniques are accurate. How do we know that we aren’t being tricked, hmm?” she trilled, her eyes bright with laughter. “Give us a lesson and a fish and then I’ll show you how to catch a robin properly.”

Truth be told, Blizzardfang couldn't care less what the fishfaced RiverClan cats got up to in their free time. He was not interested in learning how to fish when the waterways were already starting to freeze over. He didn't trust any of ThunderClan's neighbors as far as he could throw them. He was mostly silent while the more charismatic--regardless of whether it was genuine or they were just good at faking it--cats chatted one another up. He used the minor distraction to study both Scarletwolf and Redstripe more closely. He watched how they each responded to Icetail's casually flirty invitation. Blizzardfang didn't think much of her advances. A little friendly banter wasn't enough to start a war, and it usually boosted morale among clanmates.

He rolled his blue eyes when Redstripe enthusiastically agreed with his joking statement. He wouldn't fight it, though. At this point, he was sure that things would be easier for him if he just played along like everyone else. This was, by far, not his favorite encounter with RiverClanners, but he supposed that it was better than fighting for no reason. Neither clan had sole ownership of the stretch of land because neither leader was willing to push for it so close to leafbare. ThunderClan had its own host of issues to deal with, and he assumed their neighbors did as well. As long as Icetail didn't reveal anything about how their clan was truthfully fairing, Blizzardfang saw no harm in a bit of competition. She had gone mad if she assumed he would participate, though.

A smirk graced his lips with Icetail's bargaining skills. "An eye for an eye," he murmured, mostly to himself. If none of the other cats were paying attention to him, they would have easily missed it. She was smart enough not to be fooled by the slippery RiverClanners, and he hadn't even needed to say anything. An odd sense of pride warmed him slightly. He cleared his throat, pushing that paternal feeling away. His tail swished uncomfortably, but he played it off rather well. "So, what do you say? A fishing lesson and a pouncing lesson. Both teams leave with a prize," he meowed smoothly, quirking a questioning brow at the two red tabbies. Blizzardfang hadn't yet realized that he unintentionally included himself by saying 'teams', but he would likely regret it.

RC can choose to walk away in this round if you want (we'll each have 3 posts once it's over). Or we can continue if everyone is in agreement. or even set up a different time for the lessons. Doesn't matter to meeeee. <33
